ECTOPIC THYROID Anywhere along the course of thyroglossal tract commonest at the base of the tongue " lingual thyroid " Downward growth of the thyroglossal tract may extend to:- Behind the sternum (Retrosternal thyroid). Posterior mediastinum through tracheo-oesophageal groove (Intrathoracic thyroid). Clinical Picture of Lingual Thyroid: Firm nodule at the base of the tongue . Dating since birth. May increase in size during menstruation. If it is big it may interfere with swallowing, speaking, and breathing. Ulceration and bleeding may be caused by trauma. Treatment: · Excision of the Ectopic lingual thyroid provided that the normal thyroid is present . L thyroxine tablet may be given to reduce size of the gland.
