Definition: It is retention cyst of sebaceous gland due to obstruction of its punctum by infection or thick secretion. Common sites: scalp, face, neck, scrotum. Multiple cysts are common esp. in scalp & scrotum. Cl. Picture: Swelling with the following special features: (1) Attached to skin at the site of the punctum which can be detected in many cases, and sebum may be expressed from it on pressure over the swelling. (2) The cyst usually not tense containing greasy, thick, greyish material. (3) If it is big it may shows indentation. Complications: 1- Infection ® Abscess. 2- Rarely, ulceration & fungation ® Cock's peculiar tumour. 3- Sebaceous horn due to accumulation of thick sebaceous material. 4- Baldness may result in with multiple seb. cysts, in the scalp due to continuous pressure on hair follicles. 5- Sebaceous carcinoma in very rare cases in which seb. adenoma was present. Treatment: 1- Complete excision through elliptical incision. 2- If infected, drainge is done 1st. then complete excision is done after infection subside.
